Iranian Revolution effect
on the Soviet 49th Tactical Air Army

After Iranian Revolution, the Soviet Union reinforce their forces at the Iran-Soviet border. The veteran MiG-21PFM Fishbed-F fighter-bomber aircrafts were replaced in the in 1979 with the early Su-17 Fitter-C types at the 217th Fighter-Bomber Air regiment. The second-hand Su-17 Fitter-C fighter bomber aircraft arrived from Soviet Far Eastern Military District’s 1st Special Far Eastern Tactical Air Army.

The 217th Fighter-Bomber Air Regiment used Sukhoi Su-7U Moujik trainer type on the Kzyl-Arvat airport in the eighties. All Su-17 Fitter-C and Su-7U Moujik arrived in camouflage colors.

In 1979, they participated in the Soviet combat training program at Mary-1 airport. Here at the 1521st Combat Training Center the 217th Fighter-Bomber Air Regiment 's pilots and commanders received new tactics and low level flight training.
