Accelerated Soviet pilot training at Sennoy - Bagay-Baranovka airbase in the seventies

At the end of the sixties, the Soviet Tactical Air force urgently needed new pilots. Therefore they established the new 74th independent Training Air Regiment at the Sennoy - Bagay-Baranovka airfield (Volga Military District) at the end of the sixties. The new training regiment used MiG-17 ‘Fresco-A’ and MiG-15UTI ‘Midget’ training aircraft. Younger high school graduates aged between 19 and 20 came here with a DOSAAF pre-qualification as well as young graduates from other non-military schools arrived here for military pilot training. The purpose of the training was to train many new pilots fast. The following photos were taken between 1974 and 1977 in Sennoy - Bagay-Baranovka and nearby smaller air bases.
 

In the second half of the seventies, the 74th independent Training Air Regiment received high-speed MiG-21PFM ‘Fshbed-F’ and MiG-21UM ‘Mongol-B’ training aircraft. Later around 1980, the regiment was transformed to the 343rd Instructor Fighter Air Regiment with diverse MiG-21SM ‘Fishbed-J’, MiG-21bis ‘Fishbed-L’, MiG-21UM ‘Mongol-B’, MiG-23MLA ‘Flogger-G’, MiG-23UB ‘Flogger-C’ fighter types and they switched to qualitative training.
