The Soviet 431st Fighter Air Regiment PVO (21st Air Defense Corps/10th Independent Air Defence Army) used the MiG-19 ‘Farmer’ type between 1960 and 1973.

The MiG-19 ‘Farmer’ type capable of supersonic speed, defended the Soviet Northern Fleet's main bases in Murmansk region. The 431st regiment used MiG-19PM ‘Farmer-E’ with four RS-2U 'AA-1 Akali' beam-riding missiles and MiG-19S ‘Farmer-C’ version with three 30 mm gun, between the end of the sixties and early seventies. In this period, they used some older MiG-17 ‘Fresco’ trainer aircraft too.

The 431st regiment replaced their MiG-19 interceptor type with newer Su-15TM ‘Flagon-F’ in 1973 at the Afrikanda airport.
