Early MiG-31 interceptors at the Amderma airport between 1987 and 1993

The first new MiG-31 ‘Foxhound’ interceptor aircrafts arrived to Amderma airport in 1987. The new MiG-31 ‘Foxhound’ air defense aircraft type replaced the older Tu-128 ‘Fiddler’ type in the late eighties. The 72nd Guard Fighter Air Regiment PVO used early production MiG-31 ‘Foxhound’ air defense fighter aircraft type with Solovyov D30F-6S afterburning turbofan engine.

The 72nd Guard Fighter Air Regiment's personnel were very busy in the second half of the eighties. The tension was constant in the northern region until the end of 1989.

The operation of the 72nd Guard Fighter Air Regiment PVO at the Amderma airport was too expensive after the Cold War. In October 1993 the 72nd Guard regiment moved to the southern Kotlas airport. Here the 72nd Guard regiment merged with the local 445th Fighter Air Regiment PVO. The new 458th Fighter Air Regiment PVO was established at Kotlas airport in 1993.
