Soviet MiG-25 Foxbat interceptors at the Letneozersky airport Arkhangelsk region

From the first half of the seventies the USAF 9th Strategic Reconnaissance Wing's Lockheed SR-71 long-range, high-altitude, Mach 3  strategic reconnaissance aircraft often flown over the Barents Sea. This particular mission's task was to get information about the Soviet submarine bases in the Murmansk region, on the Barents Sea. After a more successful mission on 31 March 1979, Det 4 of the 9th SRW was established at RAF Mildenhall airbase. Detachment 4 was created as the European Lockheed SR-71 and TR-1 operating unit.

In response, the Soviet Air Defense Forces leaders sent high-speed MiG-25P 'Foxbat-A' interceptor type in the north region. The 23rd Air Defense Division's 524th Fighter Air Regiment PVO's crews went to the 148th Training Center for retraining in 1976. They replaced their Yak-28P 'Firebar' interceptor aircraft with the new MiG-25P type. After the defection of Viktor Belenko, the regiment's MiG-25P 'Foxbat-A' type was reconverted to the PDS ‘Foxbat-E’ version.
