Life at the Besovets air base in the eighties

In 1978 two fighter-interceptor regiments (57th and 911th) of the 5th Soviet Air Division merged at the Besovets airport. The new 57th Guard Fighter Air Regiment PVO flew with Su-15TM 'Flagon-F' traditional interceptor type between 1978 and 1991. Besovets airport settled in a huge northern forest.

The Soviet 57th Guard Fighter Air Regiment PVO defended Leningrad city from the north-east near the Finnish Soviet border with Su-15TM 'Flagon-F' type. The regiment received the first MiG-31B 'Foxhound' interceptor aircraft in 1990.

After the end of the seventies, the 57th Guard Fighter Air Regiment PVO traveled often to Norilsk airport beyond the Ural Mountains and the Arctic Circle. After 1987 the regiment sent two squadrons Su-15TM aircraft to Norilsk these settled here all year round. It was very difficult for families.

The Soviet 57th Guard Fighter Air Regiment PVO travel often south to 116th Air Defense Training Center from Besovets for missile shooting and complex air defense combat training. The following photos of the 57th guard regiment’s crew and their Su-15TM 'Flagon-F' interceptors were taken at the Privolzhskiy, Astrakhan military airfield nearly the Volga river at the end of the eighties.
