In the sixties, two air regiment operated at Cherlyany airport. The 159th Fighter Air Regiment flew with MiG-21 ‘Fishbed’ frontal fighter aircraft, and the 230th Front Bomber Air Regiment used the two-engined IL-28 ‘Beagle’ tactical bomber type.

In 1965 the 230th Front Bomber Air Regiment received new high-speed Yak-28 bomber aircraft from the 39th Irkutsk aircraft factory. The main type was the Yak-28I ‘Brewer-C’ tactical bomber aircraft. The regiment used Yak-28L ‘Brewer-B’ and Yak-28U ‘Maestro’ type as trainer aircraft too.

In the Cold War, the local Soviet Armies were planned to be moved from the Carpathian Military District to become part of the Czechoslovak Front. If war broke out between NATO and the Warsaw Pact, the 230th Front Bomber Air Regimen planned to be connected to the Czechoslovak Front. The Yak-28 ‘Brewer’ bombers would have attacked the NATO targets from here with nuclear weapons in West Germany. Later the 230th Front Bomber Air Regiment received Yak-28PP ‘Brewer-E’ electronic warfare aircraft too.

Between 1976 and 1977 the 230th regiment replaced the Yakovlev Yak-28 ‘Brewer’ bombers with modern Su-24 ‘Fencer-A/B’ supersonic all-weather attack aircraft at the Cherlyany airport.
